Tar and Chip Driveways

Tar and chip, or Macadam driveways are created by putting hot tar on top of a gravel base. While the tar is still hot, stones are tossed onto it. This makes them stick there. To ensure that the stones stay in place, a steam roller is used to go over them. When purchasing this type of driveway, buyers usually make sure that the stones are appealing, as the look of the tar and chip driveway is its big selling point.

In addition to their great looks, macadam driveways are more inexpensive than typical driveways made out of asphalt. Sealing is also not required, which cuts down on maintenance fees down the road. This type of driveway also offers good traction and extreme durability. The only downfall to this kind of driveway is that it is difficult to find people that install them.

The individual stones provide a good traction for automobiles and walking. On the other hand, asphalt driveways are smooth and can potentially turn slick in unfavorable weather conditions. Since the stones are placed one by one, there is a possibility of the driveway being hard to shovel or plow. But, with the right person installing it, the driveway will be fine!

When you have your driveway plowed, it may be beneficial to ask your plow driver to keep his blade off the ground a little- not too much, to prevent stones from coming up. This will save your stones, but may hinder the traction of your tar and chip driveway.
